Out of the box team building ideas for your next conference

In a few weeks we are hosting a conference at Manly taking the 100+ group to Hugos to partake in group pizza making using their own products and taking a Tai Chi on the beach. In the past we have initiated a movie making session with a group whereby the team was split into groups, all given their own cameras, a lucky dip of props to produce a short film in line with the conference theme.

Other exciting out of the box ideas we have to offer include a photo hunt and a do it yourself gala night. The photo hunt involves giving teams a list of photo’s they must get for example “with someone famous,” “at a prominent landmark,” “eating the local cuisine” and so forth. Then at the end the teams come together and view a montage of all the shots voting for the best. This can be done in any city and can double as a city tour which if the location is foreign enables deeper team building as the group deals with language barriers and navigation in an unfamiliar city. The do it yourself gala night is your evening, your way. Teams are given different tasks of chefs, artists, entertainers, hosts and are responsible for setting that up on the night…the most creative team wins.

Amora Review

Veritas Events Management recently had a meeting at the Amora hotel, Sydney. As part of the Production team we are always out to look for hotels which are production friendly and also easy for the delegates to move in between sessions.  This event was broken up into a plenary session and 4 breakout rooms. As the overall event theme was based on a Rock music concept, the plenary room was transformed into a Rock studio. This was achieved by coordinating with our Audio Visual team, a free standing truss on stage with lighting attached, also having 2 stools on stage instead of tub chairs and using funky side tables with a zebra print rug. We made sure that the presenters added in music based analogies into their presentations so that everything linked in nicely with the theme. Once the plenary concluded we split this ballroom to create 2 breakout rooms. One feature of the hotel is that there are rooms available to be breakouts in close proximity to the plenary session. The client was happy that their staff did not have to climb different levels during session breaks. For a group around 100pax, we would definitely consider holding another event at the Amora Hotel, Sydney.

Shaking up corporate events

GO GLAMPING!

Glamping (glamorous camping) is really hot right now and would be great fun for a small to medium conference or incentive group.

Glamping sites usually include luxuriously spacious “tents” filled with all the modern conveniences you absolutely do not associate with going camping. Think queen size bed with Egyptian sheets, fans OR aircon (insert ooh’s and ahh’s here) in tent, bathrooms with wait for it….a spa bath! Some but not all glamping venues come with a butler and laundry service and you can choose to dine in at one of the grounds restaurants or have your 5 star meals delivered to your tent.

Most glamping venues also organise day excursions such as safaris, hiking, rafting as well which would be a great outing for a small group of colleagues to do. Perhaps a survival course or skills course could be included in the days activity as a bit of a team building activity. A gourmet picnic in a pristine location would be a lovely inclusion to a day out with nature, complete with French champagne of course!

Jamie’s Italian: Your next event or client dinner experience

If you and your delegates are looking for a great meal visit Jamie’s Italian – Jamie Oliver’s new restaurant in our very own CBD! I had the pleasure of dining in the restaurant and was extremely satisfied with the experience. It is a perfect place for a post conference meal and can even cater for holding an event such as a gala dinner.

Its positioning in the Sydney CBD would work very well for an event or client dinner. The restaurant takes bookings for 6 or more persons, anything less than this and you can just turn up – which is fantastic for those events where you need flexibility.

Just before going onsite with a pharmaceutical conference, which I was event managing, I decided to purchase a gift voucher for my client; this experience was all facilitated online and really easy – I highly recommend giving a Jamie’s Italian voucher if you need to give a gift with experience.
